Description

Passionfruit (Passiflora edulis)

This vine grows quickly along many surfaces, attaching itself by means of coiling tendrils.  The flowers produced are large and beautiful and the fruit is eaten by many.  Within the berry there are black seeds with a membranous sac surrounding them that is filled with juice which taste slightly acidic and musky. The fruit is eaten raw, juiced, made into syrup or used in sauces, cakes, ice creams, sherbets and more.  Leaves are cooked and occasionally used as a vegetable. These vines prefer moist and well drained soils and a position in dappled shade.  

Medicinally, these fruits are high in Vitamin C.  They have anti-inflammtory, antimicrobial, lipid lowering, antioxidant and anti-tumour properties.  

Fun Fact: An edible oil is made from the seed.
