Coconut (Cocos nucifera)

Coconut trees can be found anywhere on the island, from coastlines to gullies.  This tree is a member of the palm tree family and is known to be one of the most useful trees in the world as every part of the tree can be used in various ways. It provides food, fuel, cosmetics, folk medicine, building materials and more. Coconut trees require well-drained soil and can grow well in full sun.  They are able to tolerate salty environments.

Medicinally, the seed oil is rubbed onto stiff joints for relief. It is also used to treat rheumatism and back pains or as an ointment to maintain smooth, soft skin. The juice is drunk by women who have difficult pregnancies and to treat kidney problems.

Fun Fact:  The woody shell surrounding the seed can be used as cups, bowls, buttons, combs, bangles, musical instruments and more.
