Description

Surinam Cherry (Eugenia uniflora)

This plant is an evergreen shrub which is often used in gardens as a hedge or screen.  It is adaptable to various types of soil but prefers high levels of organic matter in the soil.  Surinam Cherry shrubs also prefer full sun which allows them to maintain good health.  The plants are deep rooted and can withstand drought.  The ripe fruit has a tangy and sometimes bitter flavour with a strange after taste.  However, some people believe the fruit is very sweet, juicy and slightly spicy.  This depends on which variation is grown. It can be made into jams, jellies, pies, juices, sherberts and more.

Medicinally, an infusion is used to treat colds, cough and fever.  Crushed and steeped in water, the leaves are used as a wash to soothe irritated skin.  The fruits are used to reduce blood pressure.

Fun Fact: The leaves are spread on the floor of Brazilian households with the crushed leaves giving off a smell that repels flies.
